Information Security Scam

Please be advised of a recent information security scam involving an individual falsely claiming to be an employee of RPI. This person, who has no affiliation with our Institute, contacted a recent RPI graduate and transferred them to someone posing as an immigration official. The caller then threatened to withhold or revoke the student’s degree and attempted to extort money.

Legitimate inquiries regarding a student’s immigration status will never involve threats, intimidation, or demands for payment. This individual has no authority over student academic credentials.

If you receive a call from someone posing as a RPI employee, immigration authority, or law enforcement official, please report it immediately to Public Safety at 518-276-6611.

We are grateful for your vigilance in helping to maintain a safe RPI community.
