TAP combines clinical counseling with outdoor recreation to engage students on cognitive and behavioral levels.

This is a six-week group therapy program hosted by the Student Health Center and Outdoor Programs. Gear and equipment will be provided. No experience is necessary.

OWL introduces and develops basic outdoor living and recreation leadership skills for aspiring trip leaders. Exercising sound judgment, decision-making, preparedness, and group facilitation skills will be taught while gaining a fundamental understanding of the theoretical backgrounds of outdoor leadership.

Key Concepts

  • Demonstrate an understanding of personal care in the backcountry, including thermoregulation techniques and personal hygiene
  • Use introductory risk management knowledge to analyze, manage, and/or mitigate various risks in backcountry environments
  • Create clear and concise trip plans and SWOT analysis reports
  • Demonstrate an understanding of expedition behavior, group dynamics, and trip planning
  • Formulate a nutritious, energy-conscious food plan
  • Articulate understanding of basic weather patterns
  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic land navigation techniques
  • Articulate application of Leave No Trace Principles in a backcountry setting

This program develops basic leadership skills and knowledge, enhances group management and dynamics, builds safety and risk management practices, and focuses on exercising sound judgment and decision-making. Aspiring leaders learn through direct experience, discussion, demonstration, and reflection.
